Togetherness Will Help Ladies Bounce Back

Everton’s tight knit squad will help them quickly bounce back from their Merseyside derby defeat to Liverpool, says Jodie Brett.

The Blue Girls opened their WSL 1 campaign with a 2-0 defeat to their city rivals but competed well with their more established top-flight opponents.

And Brett insists the spirit and camaraderie within the group will serve them well.

“We are a squad that is really together,” she told evertontv. “We have had a lot of new faces, including myself, come into the group. That togetherness gets you through games.

“You can have all the talent in the world but if you aren’t together as a squad then you are going to struggle. That will be a key thing for us this year.

“We always knew it was going to be an intense derby. Credit to Liverpool but we fought right the way through and we can take plenty of positives. We will review it and go again.

“We have to always look to take the positives and continue to build. We have not got time to dwell on our loss – we have to keep going and push forward.”

Midfielder Brett was one of seven new players to make their debuts in the game, starting in central midfield alongside Meg Finnigan.

She was joined in the starting XI by Dutch internationals Marthe Munsterman and Siri Worm, goalkeeper Lizzie Durack and striker Courtney Sweetman-Kirk, and was pleased to make her first appearance in royal blue.

“It was great to make my debut and get out there on the pitch,” she added. “We have had a good pre-season and it was nice to finally get our league campaign started.

“I had never played in a Merseyside derby before but it was what derbies live up to so it was good. I was pleased to get on the ball but I would have liked to have done so a little bit more.

“But collectively we will look at what we did well and what we didn’t do so well, and we will be ready for the next game.”
