Jags: Dom Got His Rewards

by Rob Urbani @Everton

Phil Jagielka says Saturday’s goalscorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin got his rewards for fighting back to fitness and displaying a positive attitude in his recovery from injury.

Calvert-Lewin injured ankle ligaments against Southampton in January, just 12 minutes into his first Premier League start for Everton.

It was cruel timing for the youngster, who had got his chance on the back of three cameos from the bench in December.

Calvert-Lewin worked hard alongside the Club’s medical staff in his eight weeks on the sidelines, including some intensive one-on-one sessions during last month’s training camp in Dubai.

This didn’t go unnoticed by Jagielka, who congratulated the 20-year-old on his first Blues goal against Hull.

“It’s great for him to get off the mark because he had been quite unfortunate to get injured so quickly into his home debut,” Jagielka said.

“It was great play from Tom and Dom decided run into the box and tapped it home.

“Conditions were quite tough in the first half - it was lively to say the least.

“In the second half we played some good stuff. When they went down to 10 men we got our foot on the ball and scored some good goals.”

Everton have kept two clean sheets since Jagielka returned to the team. The 3-0 victory against West Bromwich Albion was followed with another comfortable win over Hull.

“We knew it was going to be tough,” added the captain. “The last two teams that have come here have tried to make it hard for us.

“It was important to get the first goal and we did that. We defended the set-pieces well.”
